I am well aware I am not the first to do the homemade snow globe. But thought I would share a tutorial anyway, just to prove how easy it really is! I made these over Thanksgiving with my nieces and nephews, they loved it and it is an easy craft to do with kids! Here are step by step instructions, and a few “do not” tips to share that might make your experience a little smoother than mine was. 🙂
1. Gather supplies! The fine glitter DOES NOT WORK! Use only large glitter pieces. The fine glitter makes the water look dirty and it clumps together. I got my little trees at Wal-Mart for $.75 each. The dark green trees with the snow cover turned the water green. Stay away from those. Pictured above are the white and green glitter trees. These worked just fine. Glycerine can be found at Wal-Mart as well near the Pharmacy.
2. Hot glue your chosen display pieces to the top of the jar… (the sealer cap)
3. Fill the jar with distilled water and glycerine. I used about 3 tablespoons, but if I were to do it again, I would use more. I would fill 1/4 of the jar with glycerine and 3/4 water. This will thicken the water even more so the glitter lingers a little longer.
4. Add glitter and/or crushed up egg shells (you need lots of glycerine to use the egg shells as snow.) 1/4 jar glycerine would probably do the trick!
5. Stir.
6. Replace the lid onto the jar, sealing with super glue around the rim. (Not hot glue! Sealing with Hot Glue will cause leaks.)
7. Turn over and shake!
BRAVO!! It’s THAT easy!

I love snow globes—always have and always will! It’ a tiny bit of magic that distracts you and takes you into a happy, magical place for a few seconds. You don’t want it to be over so you shake the globe again and again. It’s happy/sad in a way. This is a darling idea for little ones, as well as oldies.
