Stylish + Pregnant

There were SO MANY times throughout my pregnancy where I found myself in tears sitting on the floor of my closet. My clothes were no longer fitting… and as time went by, my options became slimmer and slimmer, as I became, well, not so slim. But there are ways around this debacle of the shrinking closet. You don’t need to be miserable, or frumpy… (I was frumpy), during your pregnancy. So we have a guest post written by Shatel Huntley to make sure you don’t make the same mistakes I made.

Being Stylish and Pregnant for any Occasion

Pregnancy is something to celebrate – the joy of raising a human being from a newborn into an adult. Every tear, every laugh, every mistake, and every accomplishment will be well worth it. While expecting is a joyous occasion, there are often downsides. Along with the physical hurdles and discomfort, dressing up can present a whole new set of challenges. Fortunately, there are simple tricks you can adapt so you can both look and feel fabulous as you prepare to don an elegant outfit for a special occasion.

A Day in the Sun

If you are pregnant during the summer months, you will most likely want to hit the beach or other destination spots. While you may not be able to fit in your bikini from last summer, you still have stylish options available to you.  There are a few crowd favorites when it comes to pregnancy and swimwear. First one up is the tankini, offered by such retailers as Old Navy. Tankinis made from Lycra or spandex offer a slimmer look and can highlight the bust of a pregnant woman. The tops are often control fit and the bottoms come with elastic waistbands that fit comfortably around the waist. Such designs are often made where no visible gaps exist between the top and bottom of the suit. Wearing neutral tones will make for a classic elegance, and black will provide a particularly slimming look.

Another choice is the flowy tunic over a one piece. It does not fit tight around the stomach, and should hang to the middle of your backside and be even all around. This garment accentuates other parts of your body to balance out your baby bump. Underneath the tunic you should wear a scooped neckline one-piece that show off your voluptuous new body. Simple floral prints or neutral tones work best. You can pair your suit with a nice pair of sunglasses and bold accessories.

A Social Gathering

You can’t avoid coworkers, friends, and especially family during your pregnancy. There is some expectation that you will be invited to at least one or two social events before giving birth. What will you wear? A likely candidate for your social gathering will be the wrap dress. This garment is not only stylish, but comfortable as well. It highlights your baby bump and offers a flirty neckline that is both sexy yet not too revealing. This dress can also adjust to fit your waistline while cinching at the smallest point on your torso.

As your baby bump expands or contracts, so will the dress. Comfort is highlighted by the stretch fabric the dress is made from. The dress can come in a variety of prints like ones seen at, allowing you to stay true to your preference in patterns.

Business Occasions

There are times in which you may be asked to make a business presentation or dress up for the office – the idea of tight dark slacks may make you cringe, but there’s a style secret you can utilize to increase your comfort. A baby belly band can be used to hold your pants upwards without the use of a zipper or a button, all the while keeping the open waistline discretely covered. Layers should be worn so you can peel them off if you get overheated. Scarves will help you to downplay open blazers or sweaters. Forego the high heels in favor of ballet flats and clogs.

Your Wedding and Pregnancy

Buying a wedding dress while pregnant can be especially challenging, taking into account the many bodily changes that will occur from the time you pick out the gown to the time you walk down the aisle. However, the process of selecting your bridal look doesn’t have to be a thorn in your side. To ensure the proper accommodation for your baby bump you should go with an empire waistline. This particular silhouette has the skirt start right below the bust to provide you with dreamy yards of loose fabric that will skim over your curves. Vendors like David’s Bridal have plenty of maternity wedding dresses that are meant to be comfortable and stylish. To avoid becoming overheated, steer clear of heavy materials and sleeves.

Being pregnant is a happy occasion. While a woman can start to feel like she has lost her stylish edge, slight tweaks to the closet can result in a plethora of options. From tunics, to wrap dresses, and emerald waistline wedding gowns, she has all the options available to her to remain sexy, stylish, and comfortable throughout her pregnancy.

Believe me I cried on my closet floor a time or two, you’re not alone! These are All good suggestions, I will be referring back to this for round 2.

I think we all have a few sizes in our closet, just in case . . . I’ve learned the hard way to not give away all the big sizes when you’ve shed a few pounds, because as sure as not, you are going to need those big sizes again. The small sizes remain as an incentive—either that or a cruel reminder that you actually wore those pants last summer! Expandable clothing is the best way to go, for sure.
